KU offers a week long winter vacation

Officials of the University of Kashmir (KU) have extended the winter holiday to 6 February for the main campus and all satellite campuses.

There is a possibility of starting offline classes for the students from 8 February. Earlier, a winter holiday was announced from January 1 to 31 for the teaching departments and its satellite campuses at the university.

Dean of KU Academic Affairs, Proc. Akbar Masood, said that he has extended the winter vacation by one week, given the prevailing harsh weather conditions.

“It will be really difficult for the students to travel from different districts to the university and attend classes in this cold. We decided to extend the holiday till Saturday and then start classwork from Monday.

Dean Academic Affairs KU further stated that they have already informed the heads of all departments and deans of faculties about the extension in winter vacation.

"We will also issue formal notice on Monday morning for the information of the students," he said.

The Jammu and Kashmir government first ordered that physical classes for students be started in all universities and degree colleges after the end of winter vacation in the institutes.

The winter holiday for degree colleges in the summer areas of Jammu expires on January 31 while the winter holidays for degree colleges in Kashmir and winter areas in Jammu will end on February 14.

Akbar Masood said, "The government has decided to start classwork in the universities and colleges of the Kashmir Division from February 15. We have two weeks to strategize about resuming offline classes at the university."

As this newspaper had already reported, KU has formed a committee headed by Dean Academic Affairs to decide about resuming offline classes for students at the university.

“We have not decided anything yet. We have extended the holiday for now. In these coming days, we will take a decision on this as per the instructions of the government.

A top official said that KU was facing the challenge of opening hostels for all students, as there is a risk factor associated with it. "Most of the students belong to districts other than Srinagar. If we ask them to attend offline classes on a daily basis then we will have to open hostels for them as well. But opening hostels at this level will be a risk.

Already reported, the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Avantipora has extended the winter holiday to 13 February and the institute is likely to resume offline classes for students after the winter vacation ends.

Registrar Cluster University Srinagar (CUS), Proc. Mir Khurshid said they would resume normal offline classes for students enrolled in postgraduate and integrated courses.

“But for undergraduate courses, we have decided to call the students on rotation basis, as described in the government instructions. We will continue this scheme till 31 March and further decisions will be taken accordingly. '
