Poem: Becouse You Were Coming
Poem: "Because You Were Coming"
✍️ By Asfaq Ali Khan (Laltu)
That night...
The moon smiled in the sky.
The dawn—
lit up with radiant joy.
The breeze carried—
a sweet, floral scent.
And all around echoed
a song of arrival...
Because you were coming
----
In the shy face of my beloved,
I first heard—
the message of your arrival into this world.
I became restless,
I became thrilled...
Because you were coming.
---
One by one,
I decorated the house.
I filled it with toys,
gifts meant for you.
Each moment—
felt like an eternity.
I prayed, I waited,
with all my heart...
Because you were coming.
Do you even know that?
---
And finally,
you arrived—
like a ray of light among us.
For years,
I never let you out of my sight...
afraid— something might happen.
---
Once, you had a heat rash.
Seeing your pain,
I cried—
all night I stayed awake.
At dawn,
I rushed to the doctor.
He scolded me:
"You're mad!"
I said... nothing.
---
The day you had your first solid food,
I sat by you—
water in hand,
worried you might choke.
People said—
"I'm crazy."
But I didn't care!
---
And so the years passed...
Thirty years!
My little child—
now thinks he's grown.
But I…
I never realized—
you had truly grown.
---
Now,
you think I’m crazy.
You still don’t understand
this love of mine.
You get annoyed, sometimes.
I smile...
and say nothing.
---
Yes—
I am crazy.
But when you refuse to eat in anger,
I run,
in the scorching sun,
to bring your favorite dish.
Breathless, I return...
But I don’t feel tired.
Do you even know that?
---
When we sit to eat—
I give you half the fish,
a piece of meat,
and say:
"I’ve already eaten."
But I could’ve eaten too...
---
What can I do?
I can’t stop this madness!
Who says madness holds no joy?
I live in bliss...
In this madness—
for you.
Inside this heart...
Because you were coming.
