Farmer’s House Seized Over Loan in Chinchali: Child Dies Amidst Microfinance Cruelty
Chinchali, Rayabhaga Taluk, Belagavi District – In a shocking case of alleged microfinance harassment, a farmer’s family was thrown onto the streets, resulting in the death of a newborn child.
The victim, Yallavva Tukaram Mang, had taken a loan of ₹3.5 lakhs from Equitas Microfinance in Chinchali. The family reportedly struggled with repayment delays due to a medical emergency – the delivery of their daughter-in-law at home.
Despite explaining their condition, finance agents allegedly threatened to seize their home, pressuring them for immediate repayment. When the family managed to gather ₹1 lakh and approached the office to pay, they were turned away without any justification.
Soon after, Equitas staff reportedly arrived and seized their house, forcing out the family, including the daughter-in-law who had just delivered a child. The family claims that they were left without shelter, and tragically, the newborn baby died due to exposure and neglect.
The State Farmers' Association, upon witnessing the inhumane action, intervened by breaking open the seized house and returning it to the family. They condemned the microfinance agency’s actions and have demanded strict action.
Local demands have also been raised for intervention by:
District Collector of Belagavi
Raibag MLA
Gram Panchayat of Chinchali
This incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about abusive recovery practices by microfinance institutions, especially in rural and vulnerable communities.
