Vadodara Teacher Sentenced to 6 Months in Jail and Rs. 1 Lakh fine for Slapping Class 10 Student

Vadodara, August 4, 2025 — In a significant ruling aimed at protecting students' rights, a court in Vadodara has sentenced a school teacher to six months of imprisonment for slapping a Class 10 student during a classroom incident earlier this year.

The incident occurred in March 2025 at a private school in the Manjalpur area. According to the complaint, the teacher allegedly slapped the 15-year-old student for not completing homework, leaving visible injuries on the child’s face.

The student’s parents filed a police complaint, and the matter was taken up by child protection authorities. During the trial, the court heard testimonies from classmates, school staff, and medical reports confirming minor injuries.

While the teacher expressed regret and claimed it was an act of discipline, the court found the action to be in violation of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

In addition to the six-month jail term, the court ordered the teacher to undergo anger management counseling and barred them from teaching for at least one year.

“The judiciary has made it clear that corporal punishment has no place in today’s education system,” said a representative from the Gujarat State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

The school has since suspended the teacher and launched an internal review of discipline practices.
