Several hundred people were rescued today in two separate incidents of monorail trains coming to a sudden halt in Mumbai as Maharashtra was pounded by rains for the second day in a row on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). Over 500 people were rescued after a monorail train came to a halt between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park stations, while 200 others were evacuated from a monorail train that stopped abruptly between Acharya Atre & Wadala Mono Rail Station.
At least eight persons have died in Maharashtra’s Nanded district which witnessed flooding due to a cloudburst-like situation, while Mumbai received a record rainfall of around 300 mm. 350 people were rescued and moved to safe locations after Mithi river breached the danger mark for a few hours. Five teams of NDRF remained stationed in the city.
Deputy Chief Minister Ekanth Shinde, who reviewed the rain preparedness in Mumbai, said that the Government had asked the administration to install more pumps for pumping out rain water. “525 pumps were operational throughout Mumbai. There are six main pumping stations and 10 mini pumping stations in Mumbai. They were all working non-stop. What happened in Mumbai on Tuesday was almost a cloudburst-like situation. The city witnessed 350 mm rain in 24 hours and 200 mm rain in just six hours,” he said.
