Mahanaviami in Assam

Guwahati/Across Assam, October 1, 2025 - The air across Assam today is thick with spiritual fervour as the state celebrates Mahanavami, the ninth and final day of the Navratri and Durga Puja festivities. Heartfelt greetings are being exchanged amongst the people of Assam on this auspicious occasion, which symbolises the triumph of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura.
Worship and Rituals: Devotees across the state are participating in special rituals, including Maha Navami Puja and Navami Homa (fire sacrifice), dedicated to Goddess Siddhidatri. Kumari Puja, the ritualistic worship of young girls representing the Goddess, is also a significant event observed in many major puja pandals in Guwahati and other towns.
Festive Atmosphere: Community puja pandals have been drawing massive crowds, decked out in vibrant decorations and illuminated with dazzling lights. The traditional beats of the dhaak (drum) and the resonating sounds of conch shells are adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
Dignitaries Extend Wishes: The Governor and Chief Minister, along with other prominent personalities, have extended their warm greetings to the people, praying for peace, prosperity, and the well-being of the state on this sacred day.
Sombre Note: While the festivities are in full swing, many community pujas continue to observe a somewhat subdued tone, with organizers focusing primarily on traditional Vedic rituals as a mark of respect and remembrance for the state's recently departed musical icon, Zubeen Garg. Tributes to the late singer have become an inseparable part of this year's Durga Puja.
The day's celebrations will set the stage for Vijaya Dashami tomorrow, marking the immersion of the Goddess's idol and the conclusion of the five-day Sharadiya Durga Puja.
