An incident of violence was reported during an ongoing match of the 2nd M. Nabachandra Memorial 6-A-Side Senior Football Tournament 2025, organised by Sunrise Club, Kadamtala, under the affiliation of the All Jiribam Sports Association.
According to sources, an argument broke out between two competing teams during the match. The situation escalated when some supporters allegedly entered the playground and assaulted players from the opposing team. As a result, four players sustained serious injuries.
The injured players were first admitted to Jiribam District Hospital and were later referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for advanced medical treatment.
Eyewitnesses stated that the injured players belong to the Bengali-speaking community, while the alleged assailants are suspected to be from the Meitei community. However, officials have clarified that the matter is subject to a fair, impartial, and thorough investigation, and no conclusions should be drawn at this stage.
In view of the sensitive law-and-order situation prevailing in Jiribam and Manipur, concerns have been raised regarding the lack of adequate security arrangements during the tournament. Members of the public have demanded strict legal action against those involved, along with accountability of the Organising Committee and the All Jiribam Sports Association for the alleged security lapses.
The administration has been urged to conduct a prompt investigation, take action against those responsible for negligence, and ensure robust security measures at all future sporting events to prevent any recurrence and to maintain communal harmony.
