KAAC to Issue Eviction Notices for Grazing Land Settlements; 15-Day Deadline Set
DIPHU, Dec 29, 2025 — In a major move to resolve the volatile land dispute in Karbi Anglong, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) today announced that it will begin issuing formal eviction notices to residents occupying protected grazing lands starting tomorrow, December 30.
Chief Executive Member (CEM) Dr. Tuliram Ronghang, speaking after a high-powered committee meeting in Diphu, confirmed that individuals identified as encroachers on Professional Grazing Reserves (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserves (VGR) will be given a 15-day window to voluntarily vacate the land.
Key Timelines and Legal Proceedings
The announcement follows weeks of escalating tension and a recent tripartite meeting between the Assam government, the KAAC, and Karbi community representatives.
December 30, 2025: Commencement of eviction notice distribution.
January 5, 2026: KAAC to submit a crucial affidavit to the Gauhati High Court regarding the status of grazing lands.
January 17, 2026: Next round of high-level discussions scheduled to review progress.
Legal Caveat: Dr. Ronghang clarified that 339 residents who have filed writ petitions in the Gauhati High Court will be excluded from this immediate eviction phase. Their status remains pending until the court delivers a final verdict on their specific cases.

The "Kheroni Agreement," reached during the December 26 tripartite talks, outlined several additional measures to be implemented alongside the evictions:
