Arrests in Mussoorie Shrine Demolition Case Followed by Warnings; Locals Express Unease Over Outside Intervention

Mussoorie | The demolition of a small prayer site in Mussoorie has taken a new turn with the arrest of three individuals, even as a right-wing outfit has issued warnings against any attempt to restore the structure, raising concerns among local residents about escalating tensions in the hill town.
Police officials confirmed that three people have been arrested in connection with the demolition. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have stated that further action will depend on findings related to land ownership, permissions, and public order.
Following the arrests, a Hindu right-wing outfit issued public statements demanding the immediate release of those taken into custody. The group also warned that if any restoration or rebuilding of the demolished site is initiated, it would oppose the move and instead seek the construction of a Hanuman temple at the location.
The outfit has further objected to reported statements by the BJP president of Mussoorie indicating support for rebuilding the structure. Representatives of the group have said that, as a party functionary and local leader, he should align with what they describe as Hindu sentiment, and have warned him against taking a contrary position.
At the same time, concerns have been voiced within Mussoorie regarding the manner in which the demolition occurred. Several residents have pointed out that individuals involved in the destruction of the site were not from Mussoorie, but had come from Dehradun. Locals have questioned why outside groups, unfamiliar with the town’s history and social fabric, were involved in an action that has disturbed public peace.
“For decades, this place remained quiet and largely unnoticed,” said a long-time Mussoorie resident. “People from different backgrounds came here without conflict. The trouble began only when outsiders intervened.”
Residents have also emphasised Mussoorie’s long-standing culture of coexistence, noting that informal spaces of remembrance have historically existed in the hills without becoming points of contention. Many locals have expressed concern that external mobilisation could damage the town’s reputation for communal harmony and affect its tourism-dependent economy.
The disputed site is located on land owned by an educational institution. Authorities have acknowledged the presence of older graves at the location, dating back to the colonial period, but have stated that there is no final determination yet regarding the legality of later constructions or additions made at the site.
Senior administrative officials have reiterated that no individual, organisation, or political office-bearer has the authority to take unilateral action. “Any decision regarding restoration, removal, or future use of the site will be taken strictly in accordance with the law,” an official said, urging all parties to maintain restraint.
Observers and civil society members have warned that continued escalation through threats, counter-statements, or political pressure risks unsettling Mussoorie’s fragile social balance. Forest officials have also noted that construction or alteration of sites near forested areas and road bends must be approached cautiously due to ecological and safety concerns.
As investigations continue, many residents say they hope that decisions will be guided by legal process and sensitivity to Mussoorie’s unique character, rather than by external pressure or confrontational mobilisation.
