Major Setback to CPI (Maoist) as ACM Cadre Surrenders

Koraput | Feb 5, 2026 - Koraput witnessed a significant breakthrough in the fight against left-wing extremism as an underground ACM-ranked cadre of the banned CPI (Maoist), Mamata Podiami alias Mamita alias Soni, surrendered before the district police, dealing a major setback to the outlawed organisation. The surrender marks a decisive moment in ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability in the Odisha–Chhattisgarh border region.

The surrender took place in the presence of senior security and police officials, including the DIG of Police, South Western Range (SWR), Koraput, DIG BSF, SP Koraput, Commandant BSF, and SDPO Jeypore. During the formal surrender ceremony, the 26-year-old cadre handed over a 7.62 mm SLR rifle, one magazine, and 10 rounds of live ammunition. She publicly renounced violence, severed all links with extremist activities, and expressed her faith in the democratic system and the Constitution of India.

According to police sources, Mamata was an active member of the AOB Military Platoon and was involved in several Maoist-related cases. She is an accused in Katekalyan Police Station Case No. 28/2023, registered under various sections of the IPC, Arms Act, Explosives Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Security agencies are continuing investigations into her involvement in Maoist operations across the Odisha–Chhattisgarh border areas.

Authorities attributed her surrender to sustained appeals by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and senior police leadership, intensified pressure from security forces, growing disillusionment with Maoist ideology, and the Odisha government’s newly announced surrender-cum-rehabilitation policy.

Under the policy, Mamata will receive Rs 5.5 lakh for her rank and Rs 1.65 lakh for surrendering her firearm, along with benefits such as housing under Antyodaya Gruha Yojana, marriage incentive, skill development training with a monthly stipend, health coverage, and subsidised ration. An interim relief of Rs 50,000 has already been provided.

With this surrender, Odisha Police confirmed that Koraput district is now free from Maoist presence. The DGP appealed to remaining cadres to shun violence and join the mainstream, assuring complete support, dignity, and rehabilitation.
