A devastating road accident claimed four lives in the early hours of Monday after a truck collided head-on with a Maruti Eeco van on the Nagar–Daund Highway near Kolgaon, police said.

The crash occurred around 3 a.m. in the vicinity of the Mauli Temple Kolgaon when a truck travelling from Daund towards Ahmednagar rammed into the van with tremendous force. The impact was so severe that four occupants of the Eeco died on the spot.

The deceased have been identified as driver Nitin Kokate (22), a resident of Kashti, along with Gajanan Janardhan Paighan (47), Durpa Gajanan Paighan (36), and Vaibhav Gajanan Paighan (19). Three of the victims belonged to the same family.

A 13-year-old boy, Karan Gajanan Paighan, sustained critical injuries and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

According to officials, the Paighan family originally hails from Maltur in Patur taluka of Akola district. They had been residing in Chimbhale in Shrigonda taluka for work. The family had travelled to their native place and was returning when the accident occurred.

Police from the Belwandi Police Station, led by Assistant Police Inspector Nandakumar Sonwalkar along with other personnel, rushed to the scene and extricated the bodies from the mangled vehicle.

All four bodies have been sent to the Rural Hospital Shrigonda for post-mortem examination. A formal complaint is being registered, and further investigation is underway.

Authorities are continuing efforts to determine the exact cause of the collision.
